Warning—anti book post! teenage-college-student-rant ahead!
ok, you’ve been warned.
My semester is going to be… interesting. Here it is in a nutshell: American Government will be interesting, Astronomy will be fun, Statistics is going to be hell, and English is a hoop I have to jump through.
Here it is broken down:
In Stats, my teacher started the class off with his favorite quote: “there are three kinds of lies in the world: lies, d**m lies, and Statistics.” I’m not actually looking forward to it because I hate math with a passion (unless you happen to be Cindy Walker at the Epiphany School, in which case math is my favorite subject. Because Mrs. Walker is A-MA-ZING. Anyway). And I have to buy a graphing calculator. Or rather, you have to buy me a graphing calculator, because I’m using my scholarship money, and it comes from your taxes! Text book: $170, my-math-lab: $80. Not buying the textbook, sorry!
For Astronomy class, my teacher is this little old guy who can’t hear, even though he wears two very expensive hearing aids (his words) that quite obviously don’t work very well. The class is 6:00-8:40 pm…. sigh…. at least I’m a night person. Anyway. I learned all kinds of cool stuff the first day, it’s gonna be sooooo cool!!!!! because I already love it! Text book $140. Star locator: $2. How does that work? stupid.
English… how to define you. I like writing. That’s why I have a blog, review books, and write full length YA novels about futuristic spy corporations. But I really don’t like English class. First of all, my college has a thing called “peer review.” it’s where your classmates swap papers and grade them. But most college kids don’t know how to grade a paper. So you get stuff like “this is good.” then when you turn it in you get a paper back with so much red ink you can’t read what you wrote. I see it as an excuse for teachers not to have to grade rough drafts. Now I don’t think teachers should have to grade rough drafts, because college students should be able to edit their own papers. However, I see it as a waste of time. I still do my best, though. I grade papers like I review books… only I get to comment on the grammar side of things without feeling like a jerk :D Text book: $94 I probably won’t use it.
American government is going to be… interesting. And I mean interesting literally. I don’t know squat about government. (except that Separation of Church and State isn’t in any of our historical documents, it’s illegal for schools to prohibit religion, and that our country started as a Republic and should stay that way if we want to keep our freedom. I do know that stuff.) One of the things my teacher did was hand out an anonymous quiz, to see what percentage of the class knew what. One of the questions was “if you were president, what would be the first thing that you would do?” and I said “Make abortion 100% illegal, punishable by Death Penalty.” I wonder what he’ll say. I wonder if he’ll read it out loud. By the end of the semester, he’ll know it was me :D Then there were questions like “how many people hold this office” and “what are the names of the NC Senators” and “who is the vice President” etc. I didn’t now any of it. zero. nothing. I felt some dumb. I felt like some sheltered conservative homeschooler with no TV and no newspaper and—oh wait… Text book: $64. ouch.
So that’s my semester. Tomorrow I have Astronomy lab and I’m excited :D
Out of pure curiosity, if YOU were president, what would you do?

Hi Haley, I wish you the best in all your classes, ** My Rant sorry ** however I just have to say something about a comment you brought up. And I know its a sore subject for lots of people. As far as your opinion you believe that abortion should be 100% illegal, punishable by death....So if a 12 year old gets raped and that causes them to get pregnant.. The guy gets maybe 1o years in prison but the 12 year old.. that should'nt have a child should be punished by death cause she had an abortion? A lot of people have different lines as to what abortion is... Birth control can cause a miscarriage.. which depending on who you talk to is also considered a form of abortion. Then there is High Risk Pregnancies, that either the baby or the mother OR both are at risk for dying. Last but not least what if some young girl..gets raped by a family member.. and genetically there being a reason that the baby is in harm, if they abort the baby in that case is it punishable by death? Where do you draw the line.. and well where does everybody draw the line. Sorry I had to ask, due to your strong opinion.
ReplyDeleteI feel for you with the Statistics class! I waited until the very last semester to take it in order to graduate! Ugh...
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your classes!!
Oregon Kimm
Good luck with your classes.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the American Government class, borrow "The 5,000 Year Leap" from your library. It deals a lot with the founding fathers and how they wanted our country to be run in the future. I wish the every politician would read it. So much, to me at least, common sense thoughts and ideas about how the government should be run so that we would avoid all of these problems that we are having.
Hello Halley,I get dismiss from my university because i failed this statistic class. Now im working hard collect money by working in many areas so next time i can continue my study.
