I have never read Jane Austen. I’m dead serious. I don’t think that’s very good of me, do you? I figured the best (and most fun way) to get myself to read them would be to do a challenge. So here you go.
I don’t know if there is already another J.A. Challenge out there somewhere, but I’m creating one. Sign up in the comments and leave your link, and pick the button you’d like. Don’t forget to link back to this post!
(This beautiful image is by olde.fashioned)
Rules:
--Anyone can participate. Bloggers: leave a link to your challenge in the comments. Non-bloggers, leave your name (and e-mail if you like)
--Levels:
**Newbie 2 books by J. Austen, 2 re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)
**Lover 4 books by J. Austen, 4 re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)
** Fanatic 6+ books by J. Austen, 5+ re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)
--Challenge books can overlap with other challenges.
--Any format counts: bound book, e-book (check online for free downloads of J.A’s copyright-free books), audio book, or any other thing you can think of.
--Challenge runs January 1st 2010—December 31 2010.
--You can change which level you read!
Here is my list: I’m going for the Lover level, and I’ll cross each off or link the reviews as I go
- (J.A) Pride and Prejudice
- (J.A) Sense and Sensibility
- (J.A) Emma
- (J.A) Northanger Abbey
- Re-write: Darcy’s Voyage
- Spoof: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies –the dawn of the dreadfuls
- variation: Conquering Mr. Darcy
- Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters
Now pick a button from above and post it on your blog somewhere. Have fun!

Enjoy reading Austen. I wish I could read her novels for the first time again. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't say i've read them, but we own all the BBC version DVD's. Once you are finished you can borrow them to celebrate and compare.
ReplyDeleteI love Jane Austen (though I haven't read her in a while) and I'm so excited to see a challenge for her books. I will be joining as soon as I get my blog post written out and published. Thanks for the fun challenge!
ReplyDelete~Jen Unsell
Yeah? I could get some from Project Gutenberg or something and put it on my e-reader? Wow. Cool. Gotta look into that...
ReplyDeleteAll posted about at Win a Book. Thanks for the heads-up!
Stephanie from Stephanie's Written Word hosts the Everything Austen Challenge, but it's about to end. I don't know if she'll be hosting it again next year or not, but I after scrambling to finish, I think I need a break from Austen.
ReplyDeleteI am going to think about doing this one. I have never read Austen either! **gasp**
ReplyDeleteI'm in the same boat! I've seen the movies, know the plots, love the characters but have never actually sat down and READ the books. Thanks for hosting this one - I'm in for the Fanatic level!
ReplyDeleteAre the levels, such as love 4 books in total? Or are the 4 Jane Austen plus 4 related Jane Austen/sequels etc?
ReplyDeleteAlso, if we started a book, but havent finished it, can I re-start that book and use it for the challenge? (I can't seem to get through Mansfield Park)
Very excited about this challenge. Here is my post Jane Austen Challenge
ReplyDeleteThanks for running this challenge!
I think I'll try this one out. I really love Austen.

Also, some of mine aren't spoofs, rewrites etc. but they are books that I have already. Hope that's okay, I'll probably end up reading more.
Robinbird referred me to your challenge. I would go for "Lover", but I'm getting married this summer, so I'll settle for "Newbie" since I should be able to achieve that. I may end up somewhere in between!
ReplyDeleteHobbies and Hammies
Thanks for starting this challenge! I am VERY excited to read more Jane Austen. I'm aiming for the Lover level this year.
ReplyDeleteI too did the Everything Austen Challenge at Stephanie's Written Word, but failed miserable. I signed up on Mr. Linky, but only shooting for Newbie, so hopefully I'll complete it this year ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's always a shock to find there's someone who hasn't read Austen yet. You'd think I'd get used to it by now, but it always strikes me like watching a video of a dog walking on his front legs. I hope you enjoy and love her as much as I do and more!
Sign me up! Here's my post: http://my-book-obsession.blogspot.com/2010/01/jane-austen-challenge-2010.html
ReplyDeleteDefinitely add me to the list!! I could certainly use some more Austen in my life.
ReplyDeleteHere is my challenge post. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteBloggy post here: http://thisisnotnotmydayjob.blogspot.com/2010/01/jane-austen-book-challenge.html
Please sign me up! I think I will have to read at the fanatic level which will involve some re-reading. But, I have wanted to check out some of the spin-offs and spoofs!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Thanks!
I am Lisa and my blog is: http://yearofthebook365.blogspot.com/

I love this challenge! Incidentally I'm going to shoot for the Lover level. :)I'm in the same boat- although I did start reading Pride & Prejudice years ago it got left by the wayside when the semester took a nose dive into insanity. My blog link is: http://kimberlyloomis.wordpress.com/
ReplyDeleteJust as soon as I figure these things out I'll be linking back here.
Hi. I signed up yesterday. Please add me to the list.
ReplyDeleteMy post
I know I'm late, but I'd like to sign on for the Lover challenge.
ReplyDeleteWhere can I find the buttons/link to use?
Cool idea, I'll definitely join!
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to my post: http://hawkthebookworm.blogspot.com/2010/02/jane-austen-challenge.html
Well,
ReplyDeleteI read Emma last year, Pride & Prejudice, last year, NorthHanger....Abby, last year...All because of PBS doing their thing of show Masterpiece Classics. Well, PBS is at it again this year, BUT, they've put the classics with new actors! Emma was great, can't wait to see the other two JA that they do......gaileee
Don't see how you can read and review all these books! Woo!
I have a ton of Jane Austen novels and spin-offs, but I've only ever read Pride and Prejudice. This will give me a good reason to read the rest of them! I am going for the Lover level.
ReplyDeleteI've just announced I'm in the challenge
ReplyDeleteat http://flyhigh-by-learnonline.blogspot.com/2010/02/wednesday-night-miscellaneous-posting.html

ReplyDeletehttp://chel1395.livejournal.com/33120.html
This sounds like fun. :)
ReplyDeleteI've only read one JA novel and seen three movies based on two of her novels.
I'm going to do the Lover level.
I got everything ready.
ReplyDeleteHere's my link. :)

Hi Haley!
ReplyDeleteI just found out about your challenge on Austenprose tonight and am definitely in the "Fanatic" category--LOL! I'm going to have to think carefully about my list of sequels and spoofs before officially posting it, but I'm at http://marilynbrant.blogspot.com and am really looking forward to taking part!
Thanks ;).
Cool Idea and I'll take part.

I will add my Reading List later.
Have a lovely Day!
I'd like to take part - as a Fanatic [6+ books by J. Austen, 5+ re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)]. I am well on my way.
ReplyDeleteMegan
Joining you all as a fanatic (how fun!) and blogged about it here:
ReplyDeletehttp://yearofhandmade.wordpress.com/2010/02/14/join-the-2010-jane-austen-challenge-quest/
Well on my way too!
This looks like fun! Count me in! I love, love Jane Austen!
ReplyDelete~S.
I'd love to join you. here's my acceptance and reading list: http://vvb32reads.blogspot.com/2010/02/jane-austen-challenge-2010.html
ReplyDeleteOoh, this will dovetail nicely with something I'm planning on doing...
ReplyDeleteI would suggest you read Persuasion (instead of, say, Mansfield Park...); it's fantastic.
Also, do Jane inspired books that aren't necessarily rewrites or spoofs count (like According to Jane or Jane Austen Ruined My Life)?
~Misty
Hi! I was just browsing your site when I came across this entry, with a graphic that looked very familiar to me! ;-) As my work apparently gets spread around I'm sure you're probably not aware that I'm the one who made the original graphic that has now been emblazoned with your URL...if you would please add a small note crediting me as the original maker I would be very much obliged. :-)

In would love to join this! I hope it is not too late. I have already read Persuasion and Emma since the first of the year! Fanatic!!
ReplyDeleteCan I post on Facebook? I am not sure if I still have a blog?!
I've just finsihed my second task - after re-reading Northanger Abbey for my JA reading club - and posted a review of The Intrigue at Highbury by Carrie Bebris.

If it's not too late, I would like to join the challenge too.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to re-read Sense and Sensibility soon (started it a while ago and haven't finished so I'm starting again), and I'm currently reading Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, sequel to Pride and Prejudice. Thank you!

Gasp! I'm glad you're going to read some Austen! I LOVE her. I've actually already read all of her books, but I'll be reading them again for a class this summer, and I've never read any of the spin-offs, but I want to! So this is the perfect challenge for me! Love it! =)
ReplyDeletehttp://thebookishtype.blogspot.com/
Third task - I've reviewed Alexa Adam's brand new "what-if" novel based on Pride & Prejudice: First Impressions. A Tele of Less Pride & Prejudice.
ReplyDeletehttp://thesecretunderstandingofthehearts.blogspot.com/2010/04/first-impressions-tale-of-less-pride.html
I think I'll join this too, probably at the Lover level, since I read some Jane Austen every year anyway! I'll post a thingie about it soon once I'm back from holidays.
ReplyDeleteI'm game! www.momlovesbooks.com. I want to get to the Lover level too.. but I might have to be way higher on the classics and a bit lower on the spoofs... don't even know of any besides just hearing about the ones you just mentioned.
ReplyDeleteI'm heading over to the UK in July and have been reading JA a LOT in excitement of doing a "Jane Austen audio tour" of Bath I found online.
Great blog idea!! Lo)
I've decided to join! I've always wanted to read more Austen outside of required school reading.
ReplyDeleteI'm late in "discovering" Jane Austen, but I want to try the newbie level. My post is here http://socratesbookreviews.blogspot.com/2010/05/jane-austen-challenge.html

ReplyDeleteI'm doing this--and it's a challenge for me, but I'm excited!
ReplyDeletehttp://gothamgalgordon.wordpress.com/2010/07/16/jane-austen
I'm coming to this one very late, but I love the idea of a challenge that encourages me to finally get around to some of the Austen spoofs and sequels. My reading list post is here: http://lavenderkissed.blogspot.com/2010/07/everything-austen-challenge-ii-update.html
ReplyDeleteThanks for organizing this challenge!
I have posted another review for this challenge! This one is over "Emma." I believe that's either 2 or 3 for me! I'll have to double check!

I guess the challenge won't be so hard for me to finish after all because I read four Jane Austenish books in January and February so now I read to become the fanatic that I am. Next up Emma. Here's the link to my review of the first four books:

ReplyDeleteI have finished the challenge! I signed up for the Newbie level and I'm done! I may up my level!
Yes...I think I will change my level from Newbie to Lover! I've got plenty of time to read more ... and in fact, I've already read two more!
ReplyDeleteSo please change my level to Lover. :)
I'm in on the Newbie list! I thought I already commented here, my original post is from August: http://bahnree.blogspot.com/search/label/challenges
ReplyDeleteOh, I have read two recently, so am on my way! With Emma and Northanger Abbey done, I will have to decide which one next...definitely an Austen lover, especially of filmed adaptations:
ReplyDeletewww.janeaustenfilmclub.blogspot.com is my blog.
Very late to the challenge, but I am going to attempt to read Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice by the end of the year.
ReplyDeletei Just found this. How do i add the button ? how does this work?

Oregon Kimm
(formally My Eclectic Reads)
I am participating!
ReplyDeleteWe lived in England from Jun 2007 to Aug 2009 and I didn't even manage to read any JA while living there! I decided that I MUST rectify that!
I have read:
Pride and Prejudice (Jan 2010)
Emma (March 2011)
I am not sure whether Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones" books would be considered spoofs or rewrites or...?
I hope to read a few more Austen titles this year. I am also trying to read as many other classics as i can.
