Review: the Adventures of Princess the Pony

The Adventures of Princess the Pony
By Margaret Merry
Genre: Children’s literature/fiction

princess the pony

Summary:

Princess is a very small pony who has no friends. she sets out one day through the farm looking for a friend, and is rejected by the goats, lambs, mules, donkeys, and other horses. she meets a beautiful majestic horse, named Luther, who is kind to her but still tells her that he cannot play with her because he would hurt her. then it starts to rain, and Luther gets his foot trapped in sinking sand, and none of the horses in his heard can get him out because they are all too big. but Princess is small enough, and is able to save Luther. Luther promises to let her join his heard when she gets old enough, and the other horses look to her in respect and become her friends.

My review:

This was a very cute story that made me smile. It shows how ugly prejudice, being judgmental, and cruelty is. Hopefully after reading this book, children will see that they can’t judge someone by what they look like, and that it’s good to make friends that are a little different from them.

Margaret’s illustrations in this book were fantastic. Horses are beautiful creatures, but the lines, coloring, and light cast through the watercolor paintings were beautiful. here is one of my favorites.
